Frequently Asked Questions
How does therapy work? How will it help me change?
Therapy is an opportunity for deepening into yourself through a relationship to a supportive other. It is an opportunity for growth through self-acceptance and an increased awareness of familiar patterns of behavior and thought. I view transformation in a road into the self liberated from judgments, in claiming a right to be loved as you are, and in learning to find your voice as separate from others’ influence.
If I have never been to therapy before, what should I expect? How do I know if I should go? And how do I start?
You can expect a warm, supportive and playful environment. If you are suffering from anxiety or depression or are feeling stuck or confused about how to navigate a life transition or find and maintain a relationship, therapy is a great place to get some help. You start exactly where you are, talking about what is troubling, challenging or confusing to you. There is no wrong way to do therapy, and every therapeutic relationship is different depending on what you need: a supportive ear, a different perspective to a familiar problem, or simply a place to explore your thoughts and feelings.
How should I prepare for my first session with you?
Think about your specific goals and expectations of therapy. What you are seeking to change and what you are willing to question? Prepare to talk about your family history, significant relationships in your life and obstacles you are facing, both internal and external.
How participatory are you during sessions?
I am very participatory during sessions. I ask questions, point out patterns and connections, make observations about what might be happening in relationships in your life as well right now in the therapy room.
Do you assign homework, activities, or readings for me to do between sessions? Why or why not?
I do assign homework, depending on your needs. The homework can be very concrete and action oriented or it can be a suggestion of increasing awareness of your internal world around particular situations.
How frequently do we meet and how long are sessions?
We meet every week, once a week at the same time. Consistency is key when building the therapeutic relationship! Individual sessions are 45-50 minutes and couple sessions are 60 minutes.
Will we meet in-person or virtually?
That is up to you! I am seeing people in-person Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, and virtually on Tuesday.
How much do sessions cost?
My fee ranges from $180- $220 for an individual session (45-50-minutes) and $250 - $275 for a couples session (60 minutes). A credit card is stored and you are charged on the day of your appointment. A sliding fee scale based on annual income may be considered for clients who experience financial hardship.
What is your cancellation policy?
You can cancel or reschedule an appointment any time as long as you provide 24-hour notice. Last minute cancellations will be charged the full fee.
Do you accept my insurance?
I do not accept insurance payments. Please check with your provider to see if you have "out-of-network" benefits as therapy may be covered in part or in full by your health insurance plan. If you have “out-of-network” coverage, I will provide you with a statement each month which you can submit to your insurance for reimbursement. I can also submit a claim on your behalf at the end of each session, however payment is due in full on the day of your appointment and any insurance reimbursements will be sent directly to you.
Please check your coverage carefully by asking your insurance provider these questions:
*Do I have "out-of-network" mental health insurance benefits?
* What is my deductible and has it been met?
* How many sessions a year does my health insurance cover?
*What is the coverage amount per session?
* Is approval required from my primary care doctor?
